A Denver-based cannabis company got the green light from the city Thursday to expand a pot shop in north Fort Collins.

The Green Solution LLC plans to add 2,380 square feet to 810 N. College Ave., city planner Ryan Mounce said Monday. The company owns a dozen marijuana centers throughout Colorado and is in the process of getting ownership of Medical MJ Supply in Fort Collins.

Fort Collins-based Best Colorado Meds currently operates Medical MJ Supply out of the 2,320-square-foot building at 810 N. College Ave, just south of Chipper's Lanes bowling alley. The company is licensed to sell marijuana for both medical and recreational uses.

On Feb. 24, The Green Solution filed a transfer of ownership application with the city for Medical MJ Supply, chief deputy city clerk Rita Knoll said.

Before the application can be processed or the expansion can start, The Green Solution has to prove it has permission to use the drive between Chipper's and Medical MJ Supply so customers and employees have access to parking.

The Green Solution didn't immediately return a call from the Coloradoan.

Buying an existing marijuana facility is one of the only ways companies can enter Fort Collins' marijuana market. The city's licensing authority limits retail marijuana stores by only allowing owners of medical marijuana stores to apply for recreational sales licenses.

One medical license can be issued per every 500 registered medical marijuana users in the city. The cap currently allows for nine medical marijuana licenses.

Businesses that received a Fort Collins Medical Marijuana Center License prior to Nov. 1, 2011, are exempt from the cap. Because the number of exempt businesses exceeds the cap, the city is not accepting applications for new marijuana centers.
