An electrical fire at a medical marijuana dispensary damaged the inside of a commercial building on Tacoma Avenue South early Friday.

The operation had 60 to 80 pot plants, most of which were destroyed by the flames, police spokesman Brad Graham said. The owner of the business told officers he had a license for the operation.

Firefighters were called to the 2300 block of Tacoma Avenue South at 7:20 a.m. after flames broke out in the two-story building, fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said.

No one was inside at the time, and no firefighters were hurt battling the flames, Meinecke said.

Investigators determined the fire started in the basement of building where the medical marijuana grow operation was located, Meinecke said.

The fire caused $50,000 damage to the building and its contents.

Growers must be very fire-safety conscious!
