Drug smugglers are using hefty catapults, something like those used in the medieval times, to hurl marijuana across the border from Mexico to the United States, media reports said Friday.

The Mexican military seized a 3-meter tall catapult, together with a sports utility vehicle and 45 pounds of marijuana, about 20 meters from the U.S. border near the small Mexican town of Naco last Friday, following a tip-off from the U.S. Border Patrol.

A Mexican army officer said the catapult was capable of launching 2 kilograms of marijuana at a time. The smugglers had run away before they could be captured.

On Thursday, a second catapult was discovered near Agua Prieta, another Mexican border town. Another army officer in that area said the catapult was similar to the first.

Both U.S. and Mexican officials say it is the first time they have seen this smuggling method used by local drug dealers.

Mexican traffickers have previously used planes, tunnels, vehicles, boats and couriers to smuggle drugs into the United States, according to media reports.
