Florida cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy, who will play as a two-way player next fall as a junior and concentrate on wide receiver during spring practice, was given a notice to appear in court over a Sunday morning traffic incident in which marijuana was found in a car he was riding in.
Florida released a statement Thursday:
"Coach (Will) Muschamp is aware of the incident and is handling it."
Purifoy was riding in the backseat of a blue Honda that was stopped for a right-of-way violation. Police found a small amount of marijuana in the car and Purifoy was cited. One person was seen throwing a cannibus cigarette out the window, another had residue on his pants according to the police officer. The baggie containing the marijuana was found in the middle of the front driver's and passenger's seat near the emergency break (2.5 grams).
Purifoy's arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 21 but it might not get that far.
There were two other people in the car and all claimed the marijuana was not theirs. The charge is for first-degree misdemeanor for possession of marijuana (less than 20 grams), which could be tough to prove in court because of the denials.
Gainesville attorney Huntley Johnson is representing Purifoy, who called the case "in its investigative stage'' and had little comment. He did not the state attorney's office has not press charges at this point.
Purifoy was fourth on the team with 51 tackles in 2012. He recovered a blocked field goal in the third quarter at Vanderbilt and forced a pair of fumbles against South Carolina, highlighted by a strip sack on the Gamecocks' first offensive play. He had a team and career-high eight tackles vs. Georgia, blocked a field goal against Missouri, blocked a punt against Louisiana-Lafayette that was returned for the winning touchdown and had 6 tackles at FSU while starting both ways. in 2011, Purifoy had a team-leading 22 special teams tackles as a true freshman.
