Hungary - Distributors and consumers could face prosecution if a police investigation finds more than 0,02% of THC, the active agent of marijuana, present in a drink called Free Hemp, news portal Index.hu has reported.

The label of the soft drink features the picture of a huge cannabis leaf.

The growth, distribution and consumption of marijuana is prohibited in Hungary.

Máté Siklósi, spokesman for the General Inspectorate for Consumer Protection (GICP), told The Budapest Sun that the distributor of Free Hemp has not asked for a permit from GICP.

"Since the free-flow of products within the EU, distributors are not obliged to ask for a preliminary permission," added Siklósi. "However, every company has to make sure that their products do not violate the statutes in effect in Hungary."

Siklósi added that if the product proves to be illegal it will be withdrawn from circulation, and the distributor could expect a serious fine.
