Monday night, Grand Junction City Council could decide whether to pass an ordinance that would ban medical marijuana businesses and prohibit certain uses of it.

City Council will take public comment on the proposed ordinance and may vote on the issue. If the ordinance is passed City Council will also decide on when the ban will go into effect.

The meeting starts at 7 o'clock in the City Hall Auditorium on North 5th Street.

The Mesa County Commissioners are letting voters have the final say on whether dispensaries should be ban. The question will appear on the November ballot. If passed it would effect only unincorporated parts of the county.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Following a public hearing in which numerous people spoke on both sides of the medical marijuana center issue, City Council voted 6 to 1 to pass an ordinance prohibiting the operation of medical marijuana businesses in Grand Junction.

Mayor Teresa Coons cast the dissenting vote.

The decision will amend the Grand Junction Municipal Code by the addition of a new section prohibiting general uses relating to marijuana. The ban will become effective on Jan. 1, 2011.
