Head Shop Keeps Busy On N.W. 23rd

While a handful of shops on Northwest 23rd have recently closed, a neighborhood newbie is keeping busy – Mary Jane's House of Glass.

"People come in and ask one of three things," says store manager Chell Hart. "Oh, my God, you finally came over the river; what took so long? Why Trendy-Third? And is this legal?"

Mary Jane's House of Glass has opened a store along Northwest 23rd Avenue, the fourth in a chain of family-owned head shops.Hart says that the store at 1425 N.W. 23rd Ave. – the fourth in a chain of family-owned, Vancouver-based head shops – has already done more business in its first three weeks than owners expected it to do in six months.

And Mary Jane's doesn't try to be coy about what its "tobacco pipes" are more often used for.

"We call bongs bongs here," Hart says.

The business emphasizes and advocates marijuana's medicinal use, choosing to be blocks from Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital to provide patients the tools for their prescriptions, granted that doctors write such prescriptions.

Hart says the store will celebrate its grand opening in February, and there's talk of an appearance by Tommy Chong, who's a friend of the owner.
