Help. fluoresent light question

i have a 4ft fluresent light. would i be able to just move the light prongs(the things the light bulbs connect to) closer togeather to make it a 2ft light and buy a new lighting ficture to hold them and buy a new bulb?????????????

I would not do this. I think tubes come in different wattages based on length and width. You would have to change the ballast components to match the tubes.

If you want to build one, Home Depot sells kits to build your own setup.

I would consider using CFLs in limited space. CFLs also give more intense light on a light meter contrary to the lumen ratings on the packaging.
