Hemp For America Seeking Porterville's Support

During the second week of July, Hemp for America will be knocking on doors in Porterville to organize grassroots support to pass the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013.

The Industrial Farming Act of 2013 (H.R. 525, S. 359) amends the controlled substances act to exclude industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana.

To date, 19 states have passed pro-hemp legislation. The California Senate approved SB 566 in a unanimous vote on June 4. This was not the state Legislature’s first attempt at allowing California farmers to once again grow the crop. Hemp bills have passed out of the legislature in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011, only to be vetoed by the governors in office. Most recently, Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed SB 676 in 2011. While his veto message expressed his strong support for changing the federal law, he did not sign the bill because “growing such plants will subject a California farmer to federal prosecution.”

SB 566 will not take effect until hemp production is authorized under federal law.

Hemp for America will be traveling to key congressional districts throughout the nation to be the bridge between the citizens who to see hemp farming in America and the politicians who have the power to make it happen.

The activist group is travelling to Porterville to target California’s 23rd district’s House Representative Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy is the House Majority Whip and has yet to take a position on industrial hemp.

Hemp for America will be getting letters from McCarthy’s constituents urging him to become a sponsor of H.R. 525.
