Always a hot topic, the prospect of legalizing marijuana in Indiana -- whether for medical use or to curb opioid addictions -- has picked up steam, whether on one side or another.

Here are just a few local organizations or prominent Indiana figures who have recently weighed in on the state and marijuana.

Indiana lawmaker pushes for medical marijuana to curb opioid epidemic

Indiana State Rep. Jim Lucas said he plans to file a proposal to legalize medical marijuana to help curb the opioid epidemic. Lucas said his research began when he learned the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission raided a store for selling CBS oil -- which people use to cure pain.

"It's woke people up that we have to do something. It's forcing us to consider things that might have been taboo or off-limits just a few months or even a year ago," he said.

Hoosier veterans head to D.C. to fight for marijuana legalization

The group "Hoosier Veterans for Medical Cannabis" went to Washington DC to convince lawmakers to allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana.

The group advocates for medical cannabis "for therapeutic purposes and for legislative bodies to endorse veterans' right to use medical cannabis therapeutically and responsibly."

Indiana's prosecuting attorneys do not want marijuana legalized in the state for any reason

The 91 prosecuting attorneys in Indiana sent a letter to the Indiana Commission to Combat Drug Abuse, voicing their opposition of the legalization of marijuana, in any form, for any reason.

"We urge you to take a stand against these policies that would cause further harm to communities already suffering from the devastating effects of drug abuse," said David Powell, Executive Secretary, Association of Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys, Inc.

American Legion wants to legalize medical cannabis to give veterans 'safe alternative to treat pain'

The American Legion of Indiana recently discussed its support for legalization of medical cannabis, urging lawmakers to recognize its medical value.

"We want to make sure that our doctors in Indiana that treat our veterans have every tool available to them in their toolbox," Lisa Wilkin, Legislative Director of AMVETS, said. "We have doctors who tell our vets they would be better off using marijuana than the drugs they're able to give them."

Mother of veteran killed in standoff wants medical marijuana legal to 'give our vets another choice'

The mother of a man who was killed after a standoff with police said her veteran son was suffering from PTSD and medical marijuana could have helped him.

She said she noticed her son doing odd things after he returned from war, such as acting out in anger, looking under cars and refusing to go to places he had once loved.

"The VA was trying to help but the resources they had available were not working," she said.

Indiana attorney general: Hoosiers should avoid a Colorado Rocky Mountain high

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill wrote an op-ed, saying he is against legalizing marijuana as the answer to the state's opioid crisis.

Hill cited statistics and said he listened to experts, who are not in support of legalizing marijuana.
