If Gov. Chris Christie is elected president, states that have legalized marijuana would see this short-lived freedom go up in smoke.
Marijuana is legally available for purchase and recreational use in Colorado and Washington, despite its illegal status under federal law. However, President Obama's administration hasn't penalized the states nor forced them to roll back the initiatives that voters in those states approved.
In an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation in June, the Republican governor said his administration would use federal rules that outlaw marijuana to clamp down on states that legalized recreational pot use.
"Yes sir," Christie told host John Dickerson when asked whether he'd go after Colorado and Washington.
Washington D.C., Alaska and Oregon also have legalized the personal cultivation and possession of marijuana.
Christie's hard-line attitude could not have come as a surprise to his New Jersey constituents. At town hall meetings and radio interviews, Christie has said he would veto a pending bill if it ever reached his desk that would regulate and tax pot like alcohol.
He's called medical marijuana programs "a front for legalization."
Christie has openly complained about the medical marijuana law he inherited from Gov. Jon Corzine in 2010. The first dispensary did not open until December 2012, and only two others have opened since, which three others on the horizon. Critics, including lawmakers and patients, blame the governor's reluctance and his political ambitions for the program's sluggish ramp-up, by enacting rules that make compliance complicated.
