hps distance

I am just about to plant. I have a 400w hps. Should the light be any spesific distance from the top of the soil or plant. i.e. flor 2 in" from the plant.

I think at first you want it closer to the plant, so like.. 2" - 2 1/2" inches. I'm not the person to ask though.

4-6 inchs away with fluoro's
hps at least 16 inchs away. remember those suckers get hot. puting out alot of lumens, thats why its called h.i.d

if you can't put you hand between the top of the plant and the light without getting burned...you're too close.

or what you would call extreme heat. remember there only plants. keep it green.
