IL Medical Marijuana Sales Increase

Sales of medical marijuana in Illinois are seeing an uptick as more dispensaries open around the state.

State officials report patients purchased more than $1 million in medical marijuana last month.

There are about 3,000 patients using cannabis with more 4,000 approved to purchase it legally.

Growers paid roughly $66,000 in taxes in January.

The growth of marijuana business is not just happening in Illinois.

The business is booming across the United States.

Nationwide, Americans spent around $5.4 billion on legal marijuana in 2015.

The Washington Times says that's more than American spent on Cheetos, Doritos, and Funyuns combined.

Researchers expect legal market sales will grow to more than $21 billion by 2020.

There are 23 states which allow medical marijuana use.

Four states and Washington D.C. Allow recreational use by adults.
