As Champaign's first medical cannabis dispensary prepares to open, its organizers are preparing the first in a series of public events to answer residents' questions and concerns.

Phoenix Botanical plans to open its storefront location on South Neil in April, said Dann Linn, the company's National Policy Director, adding that construction on the dispensary is underway. Once construction ends, the dispensary will have to pass a state inspection, then vet and hire workers, Linn said.

"We know that patients that live in this area are currently driving to Springfield or Canton to get access to their medicine," Linn said. "So we're hoping to open up and provide a safe and legal outlet for these patients to get access to this medicine and serving the greater east-central Illinois region."

Linn said the company is holding a public forum Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Champaign Public Library so that residents can ask questions and gather information about medical cannabis. He said the company plans to hold other events in Champaign, Urbana and other surrounding communities.
