Illinois: Medical Marijuana Could Be Sold Near Ballpark

Patients could soon be able to buy medical marijuana right next to a local ballpark.

The first dispensary in the metro east will be located in Sauget, just off Interstate 255.

The company TGS Illinois has made the first cut, but still needs to make the next one.

This is in the middle of a medical office complex and right next door is the Gateway Grizzlies ballpark.

"It's an added, an added jewel to our crown out there," says Mayor Richard Sauget Jr.

It looks like a win for Sauget, 25 new jobs and a boost in tax revenue.

The 8,000-square foot medical marijuana dispensary hasn't been built yet. It should fit right in with neighbors like a dialysis office and a center for physical therapy, but stands out a little next to the GCS Ballpark.

"It is going to be a medical facility that's where the state is taking medicine it will be highly regulated," says Gateway Grizzlies Team general manager Steve Gomrick.

He says the dispensary is a quarter of a mile from his stadium and the only changes may be to security and parking, especially for events.

"I know our chief was concerned about that," says Sauget.

He says they've talked with TGS Illinois about security.

"There are some issues that can come along with that but we feel comfortable that it will be taken care of," says Sauget.

Tanya Griffin with TGS shared this interior blueprint with us.

It show cameras, deadbolts, digital locks and motion sensors and 24-7 guards.

"We are one of the few companies in the country that have our own cannabis security company," she says.

Gomrick says for Grizzlies fans the experience won't change, if anything, the parking lot may be a little more secure.

If they are approved, they will begin breaking ground in about a month and may open late summer.

This also depends on when the cultivation centers can open and start growing.
