Eager Illinois marijuana patients are jumping the gun by submitting applications for diseases that haven't yet been officially approved.

The Illinois Department of Public Health issued a news release Thursday explaining such applications will be rejected and fees will be refunded.

Health department spokeswoman Melaney Arnold says a handful of applications have come in from patients with health conditions recommended by an advisory board last week. The board recommended 11 conditions including migraine, osteoarthritis and post-traumatic stress disorder.

But several steps need to happen before the conditions and diseases are official. The director of the department still must approve the recommendations. After that, rulemaking could take several months.

The department plans to update the medical cannabis website when applications will be accepted.
