In D.C., Medical Marijuana Makes A House Call: 200 Wiseguy Words

For the federal government, the marijuana issue is coming home.

As the feds delay a decision on whether to challenge the legalization initiatives passed in Washington and Colorado, and after federal indictments blasted the medical marijuana business in Montana, the first medical marijuana outlet in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to open soon.

And talk about a city that needs something to take the edge off.

McClatchy's Ethan Rosenberg reports that the District of Columbia Board of Health has approved three dispensaries to open in the next few months. The first, Metropolitan Wellness Center, will open shortly above a Popeye's chicken outlet at 409 8th St. S.E. Rosenberg points out this address is just two miles from the Department of Justice, but more usefully, it seems to be only about a half a mile from Congress.

Rosenberg could not reach anyone at the Department of Justice for comment, possibly because they were busy worrying about Washington and Colorado.

Ever since Oregon and California enacted medical marijuana laws, the feds have been going back and forth on the subject, warning about violations of federal law, conducting raids in both states (just a few weeks ago in San Diego), while most of the business goes on. There's an incoherence to federal policy, and while it's hard to imagine an issue being clarified when it gets to Washington these days, it may be getting too close to ignore.

Maybe everyone should consider it over some Popeye's chicken.

One floor over some Popeye's chicken.
