An Italian man who today claimed in court that he grew cannabis in order to cure his cancer has been jailed for six months, after pleading guilty to cultivating and possessing the plant.

Marco Petti, 37, from Birkirkara, told Magistrate Josette Demicoli that he grew the plant in order to produce edible extracts for use in biscuits and butter.

Petti said an American doctor had recommended the medical use of marijuana to him, but he was unable to produce any corroborating documents.

The man admitted to knowing what he did was illegal, though argued that the most important thing is that his cancer had been cured.

The Prosecution asked the court for an effective prison term, saying that the accused was found in possession of sophisticated equipment worth €3,000.

Large quantities were being grown and the accused was an expert in cannabis cultivation, the prosecution said.

Magistrate Josette Demicoli sent the man to six months imprisonment and fined him €450.

Inspector Jonathan Cassar prosecuted.
