Louisville, KY - It was once thriving 550 acre hemp plantation and on Monday Farmington harvested its first crop of hemp since the mid-19th century.

In May a crop of hemp was planted as part of Kentucky's Hemp Pilot Program.

The program efforts to educate guests about industrial hemp and the history of the crop in Kentucky.

Alyssa Erickson, with United Hemp Industries, said, "Our goal through this research is to prove that we can produce these materials here in the states. We need to gain the financial capital to get those types of processing facilities in here and that's a part of this research."

The harvested crop will be used for demonstration purposes, and what is left will be utilized by United Hemp Industries with the hope to incorporate the crop in a new line of hemp products ranging from bird feed to animal bedding.
