A Hull resident who has admitted to growing marijuana with intent to
traffic -- but has refused to enter a plea to charges against him -- is to
begin to defend himself with a statement this morning.

Raymond Turmel, 49, chose not to plead in Hull court Tuesday, forcing the
court to enter an automatic plea of not guilty to a charge of cultivating
and possession of a controlled substance with intent to traffic.

A signed admission from Mr. Turmel that he ran a drug-growing operation was
then accepted as evidence.

Yesterday, the Crown called police officers to testify about the man's
alleged operation and arrest.

Acting on a tip, Hull drug-squad officers went to an apartment building at
9 Marquette St. on July 18, 2000, Const. Michel Desrosiers testified. The
windows of Apt. 1, a basement unit, were shut and the curtains drawn,
making it impossible to see inside the apartment, he said.

But there was the smell of marijuana near a window vent, and he could hear
the sound of a motor, the police officer said.

Const. Desrosiers testified he saw a man leave from the back door of the
building and drive away.

He identified Mr. Turmel in court as that man.

The next day, he told the nine-woman, three-man jury, he and several other
officers returned to the building with a search warrant.

The officers found a number of marijuana plants and the equipment used to
grow them, including lights, containers, soil and nutrients, he said.

There was no indication that anyone lived in the apartment, he said.

Const. Paul Belley testified that he followed Mr. Turmel as he drove from
the apartment building to a garage the day of the raid. Once officers had
found the plants, uniformed officers arrested Mr. Turmel at the garage, he
said.

Police took 444 seedlings and 169 plants -- 153 ready to be harvested --
from the three-room apartment, testimony showed.

The drugs seized totalled about 1.3 kilograms.

The trial, before Justice Jean-Pierre Plouffe, is expected to last several
days.
