Dozens of signature gatherers hit the streets of San Jose on Friday in an effort to sign up enough voters to qualify a referendum repealing the city's recently approved laws limiting medical marijuana collectives.
The City Council on Tuesday gave final approval to ordinances that would limit the number of pot clubs to 10, confine them to certain commercial and industrial zones and require them to grow all the weed they distribute on site.
Critics call the ordinances unworkable and say the new laws would force all of the city's more than 100 pot clubs to close. They announced a referendum drive Wednesday but had to wait until the city clerk finalized the ordinances before they could start circulating petitions among city voters.
The ordinances take effect Oct. 27. Opponents have 30 days to gather at least 30,050 valid signatures, representing 8 percent of registered city voters. But critics were confident they would meet the challenge, citing a successful effort earlier this year that qualified a referendum in San Diego with more than 44,000 signatures.
San Diego officials have since repealed their marijuana ordinance.
