High-grade marijuana and hashish bound for Mardi Gras were uncovered by Louisiana authorities this week at Alexandria International Airport in an airplane piloted by a Gulf Shores man.

Louisiana State Police charged George Marshall, 37, of Gulf Shores, and John Marshall, 40, of Grass Valley, California, with drug trafficking. Troopers seized more than 34 pounds of high-grade marijuana, with an estimated value over $150,000, and over 550 grams of hashish, with estimated value over $8,500, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police.

The drug bust began to unfold Wednesday when U.S. Customs Border Protection and Homeland Security personnel alerted the state police's Alexandria Field Office of suspicious activity around an airplane at the airport. Alexandria is roughly 200 miles northwest of New Orleans.

The troopers investigation found that George Marshall piloted the plane from Boulder City, Nevada, near Las Vegas, with passenger John Marshall, the aircraft's owner.

"Due to events that transpired during the investigation, a Rapides Parish Sheriff's Department K-9 was utilized," the release states. "The K-9 indicated a positive alert on the aircraft. A search of the aircraft was then conducted."

A photograph provided by the state police shows the drugs -- shrink-wrapped and vacuum-sealed in clear and black plastic bags -- in suitcases and duffel bags.

"Information that was obtained, during interviews, indicated that the seized narcotics were destined for Mardi Gras," the release states.

Both men were booked into the Rapides Parish Detention Center and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with the intent to distribute.
