'Marijuana-Logues,' 68-Year-Old Comedian Will Light Up Theater

Tickets are now officially available for "The Marijuana-Logues," only 16 months after the three-man show was supposed to play the Royal Oak Music Theatre.

I wouldn't bring it up except that the reason the tour was canceled in March 2005 is maybe my favorite explanation ever: Too much audience participation.

The show stars leftover 1970s comedian Tommy Chong, best known for co-founding an entire comedic genre based on Hershey Bars. At 68, Chong has sworn off marijuana, and the production is careful to point out that it "does not glorify drug use. Rather, it illustrates that cannabis culture is a thing of substance, humor and creativity."

Chong's reformation has much to do with the nine months he spent in a California prison in 2003 for selling a bong over the Internet. You can make a case that the prosecution was much ado about precious little -- and a documentary making the rounds titled "a/k/a Tommy Chong" does exactly that -- but in any event, Chong was still on probation when he started touring with "Marijuana-Logues."

The probation specifically prohibited him from being around illegal substances. Ergo, when overenthusiastic patrons at the first tour stop in Chicago started lighting up, Chong's probation officer yanked him off the road.

The rescheduled tour alights in Royal Oak for 6 and 9 p.m. shows on Aug. 5. Tickets are $25 and $40; go to tickets. com or call (800) 919-6272.
