A proposed medical marijuana facility to be operated by Coastal Compassion was granted a special permit Tuesday from the Planning Board, bringing the project one step closer to completion.

The facility, to be located at 2 Pequod Lane off Alden Road, could open its doors by the end of the year, said Tim Keogh, president and director of Coastal Compassion.

"We're extremely encouraged by the support we've received from the Fairhaven community,'' Keogh said. "It's been a long road to this point and it's not close to being over, but it's one step closer and we're looking forward to treating the patients of Southcoast.''

Planning Board members approved the special permit by a 6-1 vote, with one abstention.

A 20-day appeal process automatically kicks in. If that period passes without an appeal, the special permit will be filed.

Coastal Compassion will now seek a building permit to make changes to the interior of the building, which previously housed a Massachusetts State Lottery Commission office. The site is located in a medical marijuana facilities overlay district approved last year by Town Meeting voters.

Keogh said the organization will work closely with the Department of Public Health and the Police Department as the project moves forward.

The facility would be used to cultivate, package and sell marijuana products for approved medical use.

Cultivation could begin this fall, with the operation likely to open by the end of the year, Keogh said.
