Only patients who have debilitating conditions may be given prescriptions for medical marijuana, according to the law that was signed this past May.

Some of the conditions that qualify as debilitating include cancer, glaucoma, AIDS or HIV, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, wasting syndrome, Crohn's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder as well as other medical conditions, treatments and diseases.

"With careful regulation and safeguards, this law will allow a doctor and a patient to decide what is in that patient's best interest," Gov. Dannel Malloy said when the bill passed.

The law allows no more than 10 certified growers across the state at any one time.

Once those growers are operating, only certified pharmacists at licensed distributors will be able to stock and sell marijuana and only from those providers. According to the governor's office, it will take some time before any of those providers become operational.
