While it does nothing to change state law, East Lansing approved an ordinance legalizing the use and possession of small quantities for those 21 and older.
The Associated Press, via the Lansing State Journal, reports the ordinance passed by a 4-1 vote. Under this city law, people of age can use marijuana on private property and possess any amount less than an ounce.
The State Journal reports this new law does nothing to change the campus of Michigan State University, where use and possession remains illegal.
For those younger than 21, smoking or possessing pot becomes a civil infraction that carries a $25 fine and a required substance abuse class.
East Lansing police Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth told the State Journal that city officers still maintain the option to make arrests under state law, but won't seek those who aren't "known drug dealers" out.
Michigan law states that possession of marijuana remains a misdemeanor that is punishable up to one year in jail.
East Lansing joins other Michigan cities such as Grand Rapids, Detroit, several Metro Detroit communities, Lansing and more.
