MEMPHIS, Tenn. - "The smell once we entered the house was pretty overwhelming. You could smell the marijuana," said an Organized Crime Unit Detective with Memphis Police.

He can't be identified but he can describe what he found inside a home in the 3400 Douglass Avenue after serving a search warrant.

"Basically two systems of tunnels that went different directions in the house. There was black plastic put up and a lot of electrical wiring," he said.

The detective says the underground tunnels were found after pulling up an in-floor heating vent. He was the first to see where the tunnels went.

"You could tell they were dug by hand but were wide enough that several people could go through them. They were about 4 feet tall to where they opened up to actual rooms."

The rooms he says each made up a part of the process needed to grow marijuana. Police located dozens of marijuana plants and over $150,000 in marijuana ready to be sold on the streets. They say the stuff they found was high end, about $3,000 a pound.

The detective says the growers behind this operation paid attention to detail. So as not to draw attention, he says fumes were re-routed and ventilated up into the air through the homes chimney and even the 50 feet or so of tunnel space was apparently made for comfort.

"The floors of the tunnel were lined with carpet and linoleum to keep you from rolling around in the dirt."
