Marijuana testing labs are waiting to begin testing medical marijuana as soon as businesses get clearance from the state to grow it.

The state will require businesses to chemically test their products before hitting store shelves.

DB Labs is the first lab to open in Southern Nevada. They are waiting on a decision from the state before they begin receiving medical marijuana to test.

"They want to find out what the pesticide list is, so that they can therefore plant appropriately and we'll have to wait for those plants to be grown," said Susan Bunce, CEO of DB Labs.

Labs are needed to test marijuana and edible products made with cannabis before being sold. Laboratory Director Savino Sguera says there are different tests for different products.

"All the products, each product has a different type of testing required on it," said Sguera.

A full round of tests takes up to three days and includes looking for heavy metals, molds, and micro-toxins. The lab also analyzes the THC concentration and pesticide presence. Laboratory Manager Marco Troiani said the results are then transmitted back to the lab's clients.

"A big part of what we do is not just running samples, it's also working with these people and making sure they have a product that they can move and they have a business that they can keep running," said Troiani.

The entire marijuana industry is waiting on a decision from the Nevada Attorney General's Office regarding which pesticides can be used when growing the plant.

When the industry opens up the lab says it is expected to test hundreds of plants a week. In the meantime DB Labs is testing other plants.

"The method development goes a lot easier when we can actually handle real cannabis as opposed to plants that imitate the matrix or the environment of cannabis," said Sguera.

"We have to produce a certain amount of results everyday and every month, so a big issue is to keep the flow of samples and information moving properly," said Troiani.

Bunce says they have decided to only test on marijuana from licensed businesses and not homegrown plants, even though it may be legal for the lab to do so.
