The Reno City Council unanimously approved a business license for the first medical marijuana production facility in Northern Nevada.

The facility will process cannabis taken from medical marijuana cultivation facilities into edible products and oils. Out of 23 businesses who applied, Cannavative Farms LLC is the first medical facility in Reno that can buy marijuana, manufacture different products with it, and sell it to medical dispensaries.

Four different types of medical marijuana establishments have been approved by the state: cultivation, production, testing, and dispensaries.

So far Reno has three cultivation facilities approved, one dispensary and now a production facility is in the works.

"We see the edible market and those products as having a very big demand," said Joey Gilbert with the Cannavative Group.

Cannavative Farms is the first production facility to have a provisional license along with their cultivation facility, that will grow marijuana.

"We're going to be able to offer medicinal marijuana for the people and the patients that truly need it and we're going to be able to offer it numerous forms," said Gilbert.

But the Cannavative Group has to go through the final process before everything is approved.

Deputy Chief Tom Robinson with the Reno Police says, "The last step in the process, once they get the provisional certificate from the state, once they get all the licenses and approvals from their local jurisdiction, the final step is to go back to the state and get their final certificate."

Both their cultivation and production establishments will be in the same building, but as separate suites required by the state. It will be located out in Stead on Lear Boulevard.

Along with the other businesses in the medical marijuana market, the Cannavative Group wants to work closely with local law enforcement.

"We're going to be working with the city, we're going to be working with the community, and working most of the time with law enforcement," said Gilbert.

The state will have inspectors that regulate the facilities, while law enforcement will enforce the rules.

"Since it's a new industry and there's a lot of stigma associated with it, that's extremely important for law enforcement to be involved," said Robinson.

Now Cannavative Farms is waiting for finalization from the state and county to be up and running. They hope to have everything ready to go by mid-summer or early fall.
