New York's Health Department has posted a list of 43 applicants seeking one of five possible state licenses to grow, process and distribute medical marijuana.

The list includes several bidders who announced proposals and some now running similar programs in other states.

Each applicant selected this summer could open up to four dispensaries where patients with cancer, AIDS, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and certain other medical conditions could obtain versions of the drug that can be ingested or vaporized, but not smoked.

Applicants have to pay a $10,000 fee for review. Those selected would pay an additional $200,000 registration fee and meet security guidelines. The licenses would be for two years.

The published list contains only the names of the bidders. The application deadline was Friday.
