Some NY lawmakers are pushing to make smoking marijuana legal for people with serious medical conditions. Assemblyman Richard Gottfried and Senator Diane Savino introduced bills on Tuesday that would allow patients with serious medical conditions to use medical marijuana if their doctors recommend it.

"Medical marijuana has been proven to stimulate the appetite in patients suffering from loss of appetite due to a host of illnesses," said David Levin, Lobbyist for the Capital Region chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

"Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed decriminalization for small amounts of marijuana and framed it as the humanitarian thing to do," Levin said. "The Governor should show the same compassion for people who are suffering and haunted by pain, day in and day out. It can be done safely and intelligently – and it's the right thing to do," Levin said.

Recent polls show a majority of New Yorkers support providing medical access to marijuana.

18 states have enacted pro-marijuana legislation; 11 states are considering it. New York is poised to be the 19th state to enact pro-marijuana legislation.
