Nigeria: Customs Intercept N14m Weeds/Assorted Materials in Sokoto

The roving team of the Sokoto Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has seized assorted imported textile materials and weeds (Indian hemp) worth about N14 million.

Speaking to newsmen while handing over the weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency Sokoto, NDLEA command, the controller of the Sokoto Area command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Alhaji Musa Nwere said the seized items were intercepted by the team led by Sc Frank Ohioma.

The Comptroller explained that the weeds were in 32 bags weighing 797 kg and estimated at about N4 million while the estimated value of the textile materials was also put at N10 million. He said the Indian Hemp was intercepted by the roving team along Sokoto-Gusau road on Thursday 14th Feb 2008 at about 02:30 hrs.

Alhaji Nwere said the seized materials also included several cartons and bales of imported spaghetti, mosquito nets, polyester materials, children and adult wears, noting that all the seizures were made between January and February 2008. The comptroller disclosed that seven persons were arrested in connection with the items mentioned above, adding that men and officers of the command would continue to live above board in the performance of their duties in order to achieve the desired goal.

Meanwhile, the NDLEA Sokoto command operations commander, Mr. Ojo Ogbechema while receiving the suspected weeds on behalf of the command commended the roving team and the inter-agency spirit exhibited by the customs command.
