A Senate committee hearing on a bill to legalize medical marijuana in Pennsylvania will feature nine people testifying about the drug, its delivery and regulation of it, according to a release form state Sen. Mike Folmer's office.

Slated to testify at the Feb. 25 hearing held by the Senate State Government Committee are Drs. Steven Shapiro and Bruce MacLeod from the Pennsylvania Medical Society, which has been reluctant to legalize medical marijuana without more research.

Dr. Jeffrey Raber and Paul Taylor will speak about delivery of medical marijuana while Drs. Jack D'Angelo, Colleen Barry and Thomas Trite will speak about medical cannabis research, according to the release from Folmer's office.

Folmer, who introduced the Medical Cannabis Act last month, chairs the Senate State Government Committee. The hearing's purpose is to discuss possible amendments to the bill, which is similar to the medical marijuana bill that cleared the Senate last year.

Legislators have expressed an interest in allowing doctors to determine what conditions can be treated with medical cannabis rather than lawmakers. The bill contains a list of 10 ailments that could be treated with medical cannabis including cancer, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder and multiple sclerosis.

Nathan Groff, chief government relations officer with Veritec Solutions, LLC, and Chris Ellis, principal of Beacon Information Design, will also testify at the hearing about their companies' abilities to regulate sales of government-regulated items.

The hearing starts at 9 a.m. in Hearing Room One, North Office Building in Harrisburg, according to the release.
