Trenton - New Jersey will accept requests next month to approve more medical conditions for its medical marijuana program, the N.J. Department of Health announced Tuesday.

The department posted a petition form on its website, and will accept requests from Aug. 1 through Aug. 31.

Health Commissioner Cathleen Bennett said a review panel will evaluate each petition "based on scientific and medical research available."

“This process builds on the medical model, which is the backbone of the stateâ€s program," Bennett said in a released statement.

Petitioners may address the review panel at a meeting to be announced. The panel will make a written recommendation to the commissioner, which will be posted online. A public hearing will be held before the commissioner makes a final decision.

The petition and public notice are posted online at NJ Department of Health- Medicinal Marijuana Program.

Doctors registered in the state's program can now prescribe cannabis for certain debilitating medical conditions, including multiple sclerosis, terminal cancer, muscular dystrophy, inflammatory bowel disease, and terminal illness.
