Supporters of Todd Stimson, the Henderson County man recently convicted on marijuana-related charges, were in downtown Asheville Saturday afternoon to show their support.

"We're trying to stand behind him and support him," said Kelly Hartmann of Asheville, a friend of Stimson's. "Our heart goes out to him while he's incarcerated right now."

Hartmann said about 35 people took part in the event at Vance Monument. Some wore bright green shirts that read: "Free Todd Stimson."

Stimson, who operated Blue Ridge Medical Cannabis Research Corp. out of his home, was charged in 2013 after Fletcher police raided his home. He said he had obtained a privilege license for the art of healing through the Department of Revenue.

In March, Stimson was convicted and sentenced to between 25 months and 39 months in prison.

"Today we are all here gathering to show our support and to educate the masses on how cannabis is healing," Hartmann said.

Stimson supporters would like to see North Carolina marijuana laws change, she said.
