The Elko Daily Free Press is counting down the days until marijuana is legal in Nevada by answering questions concerning the law.
Q: What are the medical uses for marijuana and where are the dispensaries?
A: Many people are counting down the days until marijuana is legal for recreational use. However, the drug has been legal for medical use since 2000. The voters legalized medical pot in 2000 and it took the state until 2013 to establish a system to sell and distribute the drug, according to Associated Press reports.
Nevada based its medical marijuana system on Colorado's, according to AP. Medical marijuana is legal in 25 states and the District of Columbia. This year, three more states approved the drug for medical use.
The medical marijuana laws vary from state to state. In Nevada, there are nine medical reasons approved for treatment with weed: HIV and AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, PTSD, cachexia (wasting syndrome), persistent muscle spasms, seizures, severe nausea and severe pain, said Tiffanie Huffman, owner of Green Acres Consulting.
In November, the state had 25,291 patients with cards, according to the Nevada Medical Marijuana Registry. The majority of the medical marijuana patients live in Clark County.
The registry began reporting each county's numbers in April. Before that it only reported Clark and Washoe and lumped all the other counties together. In November, Elko County had 408 registered medical marijuana patients.
Medical marijuana is legal statewide, but access to dispensaries is limited since local governments can put moratoriums on allowing them within their borders.
The southern part of the state has 40 dispensaries and most of those — 29 in total – are in Las Vegas. Henderson has five, North Las Vegas has three, and Laughlin, Pahrump and Mesquite each have one.
The northern half of the state has nine dispensaries. Reno, Sparks, Sun Valley and Carson City each have two and Incline Village has one.
