A leader in last year's effort to thwart a proposal to legalize marijuana was named Monday in Ohio to run a possible November campaign to legalize medical marijuana.

Ohioans for Medical Marijuana said Brandon Lynaugh will be the campaign manager. He worked on several previous statewide ballot issues, including the campaign last fall to defeat state Issue 3, which would have legalized marijuana grown in a monopoly of sites across Ohio. The proposed constitutional amendment was easily defeated last fall.

The issue this year is spearheaded by the Marijuana Policy Project, a national organization with a track record of backing successfully medical marijuana issues. It deals solely with medical marijuana and not marijuana for recreational use.

Lynaugh said the case of a family member who suffers epileptic seizures prompted him to support the medical marijuana bid.

"I know that helpless feeling that families have when they watch someone they love have an epileptic seizure," he said. "Passage of this amendment will help bring relief to the suffering of thousands of patients and their families."

Also added to the campaign were Trevor Vessels, deputy campaign manager; Aaron Marshall, director of communications; and Lee Roberts, political director.

The proposal would permit an estimated 215,000 Ohioans with qualifying debilitating medical conditions to buy marijuana for medicinal purposes based on a doctor's prescription and grow a limited quantity at home. It would establish a system to license growers and retail dispensaries, prohibit driving under the influence of marijuana and use in public places.
