A facility to grow medical marijuana within city limits has the support of New Castle City Council.

Council members on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution supporting plans of Holistic Industries of Washington, D.C., to locate in New Castle.

On Jan. 27, several officials including Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo and council members Bill Panella and Richard Beshero, police chief Bobby Salem and Lawrence County District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa met with Keith Morgan and Richard Genderson. The two, who say they alread operate similar "grow" facilities, said they found a facility in New Castle that will suit their needs and will apply for a permit to operate a growers/processors facility in New Castle to grow medical marijuana.

They estimated that when fully operational, this could include 100 to 150 new jobs.

On April 17, 2016 Pennsylvania approved legislation permitting the sale of medical marijuana.

The state Department of Health has announced plans to issue permits for 12 growers/processor facilities and up to 27 dispensaries. Applications must be made by March 20.

City officials were told an operation in New Castle stands a good chance of being selected this this is a financially distressed community. During their New Castle visit, Morgan and Genderson visited sites on the South Side and in Mahoningtown as possible locations for their operation.
