Police have seized more than $1 million worth of hydroponically-grown can-nabis from a property just north of Proserpine.
Detectives allegedly found the crop in four sheds on a one-acre Shute Harbour Road property at Mt Marlow at 9.30am Saturday.
About 600 cannabis plants, between 25 and 30 kg of dried cannabis, hydroponic equipment, a large sum of money and a firearm were found on the property, Whitsunday police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve O’Connell said.
Police allege the crop was grown using a complex hydroponic system, including heating rooms, cooling rooms, drying rooms, lighting and air conditioning.
Although much of the crop was analysed, certified and destroyed at the scene, police rented a five-tonne truck to transport seized marijuana and hydroponic equipment to be used as evidence, Sen Sgt O’Connell said.
"We estimate the street value of the cannabis found on Saturday to be between $1.3 and $1.5 million," he said.
"Its destruction will put a dent in the local market."
A 59-year-old man and his wife, 56, were arrested and charged with trafficking, producing and possession of drugs, tainted property and unlawful possession of a weapon.
They will appear in Proserpine Magistrate’s Court today. Another man, 43, has been charged with possessing cannabis and will appear in court on October 16.
Saturday’s raid involved about 15 officers from the State Drug Investigation Group’s Plantation Unit, Whitsunday police and Mackay police.
The operation was the result of a Crimestoppers tip-off.
