Rhode Island Senate Committee To Hear Recreational Marijuana Bill

Lawmakers will once again consider legalizing the use and possession of marijuana for adults over 21. The idea is to regulate and tax the drug like alcohol. Proponents say that would cut down jail time for small-time offenders and increase state revenue.

Opponents of the bill, including some law enforcement officers and members of the recovery community, say legalized marijuana would increase public access to what they consider a dangerous drug.

Other bills on the docket deal with medical marijuana, which has been legal in Rhode Island since 2006.

One would establish a pair of for-profit cultivation centers as the sole distributors to the state's retail medical marijuana stores. It would also eliminate caregivers, individuals licensed to grow marijuana for patients.
