Sacramento Considers Pot Dispensary Restrictions

City officials in Sacramento are considering new restrictions on medical marijuana dispensaries.

The City Council voted unanimously this week to have city staff draft an ordinance that would prohibit dispensaries within 500 feet of parks, schools and other places where children gather.

They would also have to be at least 500 feet away from churches and substance abuse centers.

The city currently has 39 marijuana dispensaries. City officials say only two or three of those would meet the proposed ordinance's guidelines although more could be allowed with special permits.

The language of the ordinance is expected to be finalized by late September.

Sacramento has also proposed taxing medical marijuana sales if voters pass a statewide proposition to legalize pot use by adults.
