Sensible B.C. Faces An Uphill Battle Over Marijuana Decriminalization

Cannabis activist Jodie Emery is worried about the chances of success of a planned ballot initiative on marijuana decriminalization in B.C.

"The way the provincial government has arranged the referendum process is unfair, undemocratic, inaccessible, and impossible," she told the Straight in a phone interview.

The Sensible Change Society is spearheading an initiative vote in September 2014 to amend the Police Act to direct law enforcement away from marijuana-possession cases.

Prior to a referendum being held, the group's campaign must first gather the signatures of 10 percent of voters in each of B.C.'s 85 electoral districts between September and November. "If we had the referendum vote today, we would win," Emery said. "It's the signature-gathering that isn't fair."

Sensible Change Society director Dana Larsen told the Straight by phone that "the odds are probably against us."
