The morning of Tuesday, March 27th , two Shawnee County Sheriff's deputies stopped a 2007 Toyota Avalon on eastbound I-70 at the Auburn Rd exit for following too close and unsafe lane change. After talking to the driver and passenger, the deputies became suspicious of illegal activity and asked for permission to search the vehicle.

After permission to search the vehicle was granted, Deputies Brian Rhodd and Tracy Trammel found 31 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle, with a street value $50,000.

Novelette Bell of New York (the driver) and Oneil Grant of Florida (the passenger) were both arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Both were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of marijuana and no Kansas drug tax stamp. Bell was also charged with criminal damage to property. The vehicle was a rental, and the back seat was damaged to conceal the drugs.
