Farmers have harvested the first commercial hemp crop in Queensland.

The crop, grown near Murgon, north-west of Brisbane, is the first since the Queensland government lifted restrictions on commercial hemp production late last year.

Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said his department had licensed 16 growers to produce the crop, which he hoped would bring new opportunities for the product in Queensland.

Mr Palaszczuk said industrial hemp's versatility and compatibility with farming systems made it viable for farmers to rotate with other crops such as sugar or cotton.

"Industrial hemp fibre and grain products have experienced an international increase in demand and have the potential to provide opportunities for economic development, jobs and environmental benefits to Queensland."

Mr Palaszczuk said he hoped Queensland would not only grow and harvest hemp but produce paper, rope and other textiles from the crop.

Licences to grow hemp were valid for only three years at a time and required a tough regime of criminal history checks and fingerprinting, he said.
