MAINE - If Northeast Patients Group wants to open a medical marijuana dispensary at a site it's been eyeing on Congress Street it's okay with the state.
A nearby ministry had objected, saying it's too close to a school it operates. According to state rules medical marijuana dispensaries can not open within 500-feet of a school.
The Rev. Stephen Reynolds says his Deliverance Center just down the street from the old Key Bank building under considered has been operating a school since 1979. He says it's also home to recovering addicts and the use of marijuana goes against everything they teach there.
The state's director of Licensing and Regulatory Services says after looking into Reynold's claims she has determined the Deliverance Center is not a school. It is not licensed by the state, in fact officials at the state Department of Education have never heard of it.
"If they're not known by the Department of Education, to me that says they're not a school, so its a non issue. The Deliverance Center has not sent us any information asserting they're a school", said director Catherine Cobb.
Northeast Patients Group is the California based organization that was awarded 4 of the 6 licenses to dispense medical marijuana in Maine. The group has not yet committed to that specific location. Officials with the group have stated in the past they want to open up somewhere in the city by the end of the year.
