The Anchorage Assembly is looking for public input on how the municipality should manage legalized recreational marijuana in Alaska's largest city.

A town hall meeting on Feb. 28 is the first being held by the Assembly's Committee on the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana, said committee chair and assembly member Ernie Hall. In December, the Anchorage Assembly formed the committee, the sole purpose of which is to consider how to implement marijuana sales.

"What we're really looking for is the community to be there, whether you're pro or con, and share with us concerns and issues you may see," Hall said.

The meeting will open with several presentations, Hall said.

Municipal Attorney Dennis Wheeler will give a short presentation on legalities that the state and municipalities are now grappling with, Hall said.

Anchorage Police Department Deputy Chief Myron Fanning will be giving a presentation that includes information gleaned from a conference in Colorado attended by many Alaska policymakers.

Hall will also be giving a presentation covering a "bit of background" about the initiative, he said.

The meeting will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Loussac Library in the Assembly Chambers at 3600 Denali Street in Midtown Anchorage.

On Feb. 17 the Assembly will consider and hear public comment regarding a proposed ordinance that would make extracting marijuana concentrates with flammable solvents such as butane illegal in Anchorage without a permit.

In late January, the Assembly passed an ordinance defining public consumption of marijuana -- which is prohibited by the initiative -- in the municipality.

Recreational marijuana use becomes legal for those older than 21 on Feb. 24.
