An Illinois doctor has been accused of unlawfully charging patients for marijuana recommendations.
An Illinois doctor accused of unlawfully recommending medical marijuana without proper doctor-patient relationships now may lose his medical license, as reported by the Star Tribune.
Dr. Bodo Schneider is the third Illinois physician to run up against legal woes regarding medical marijuana since state dispensaries started selling cannabis less than one month ago, according to the Associated Press.
Schneider has been working with clinics and helping familiarize Illinois patients with the state's medical cannabis program for months now, according to WPSD Local 6 News.
Per WPSD Local 6 News:
Dr. Schneider's staff uses the Illinois prescription monitoring website to ensure that none of their patients are abusing medical marijuana, or any other prescriptions.
Enforcement practices regarding medical marijuana recomendations vary quite a bit between states, and Illinois' government is clearly taking a hard-lined stance.
Some patients fear they may have their access to medical marijuana revoked if Schneider is punished.
One patient, David Kurfman, traveled 500 miles round-trip to see Schneider at his Marion clinic because he couldn't find a doctor near his central Illinois home that would recommend marijuana treatment. Kurfman told the Associated Press he paid $185 for three doctor visits and one physical exam, according to ABC News.
Per ABC News:
Kurfman said he couldn't find a doctor in central Illinois who would recommend marijuana, which he uses to control seizures from epilepsy.
"I hope the charges are dropped against him. The best thing for me is for more doctors to get on board and do recommendations," Kurfman said.
