The Village of Downers Grove is preparing for the new Illinois medical marijuana law by taking a look at its zoning code.

The Village Plan Commission voted unanimously Monday night to recommend adding medical marijuana cultivation centers and dispensaries to the list of allowable special uses in areas zoned for light manufacturing.

That recommendation will go on to the village council for ultimate approval, and will likely make its first council agenda appearance in early November, village spokesman Doug Kozlowski said.

Village Planner Stan Popovich said no prospective owners have approached the village formally or informally regarding possible marijuana cultivation or dispensary centers.

The special use would require a marijuana dispensary to be at least 1,000 feet from a school or park, and a cultivation site would have to be at least 2,500 feet away from both, as well.

In addition to applying for a special use permit with the village, any prospective marijuana clinic owner would have to comply with a lengthy list of state standards listed in the new statute.
