Benton City voters were slightly favoring allowing marijuana stores and growers in their city in the initial ballot count Tuesday.

The difference is 20 votes with 311 votes for allowing pot businesses and 291 opposing.

Proposition 16-9 was on the ballot to advise the Benton City Council on whether to allow recreational and medicinal marijuana production, processing and retail sales within city limits. The results are not binding.

The council voted in April to lift a temporary moratorium on marijuana-related business but reversed itself a few weeks later after listening to public comments at a council meeting.

If the Benton City Council authorizes marijuana businesses, it will join Prosser as one of just two cities in Benton County to allow the businesses.
