WA: Yakima County Authorities, Marijuana Businesses Could Clash

This year could prove contentious between Yakima County authorities and recreational marijuana businesses in unincorporated areas of the county, where an ordinance prohibits them from operating.

County authorities have revamped policy and staff in their code enforcement office, enabling them to respond quicker to such code violations.

Last year county commissioners said they planned to take some sort of action on the matter in 2017, but have not clearly said what that action would be.

Meanwhile, more than 20 marijuana business owners affected by the ban have been mounting a defense by forming a growers association and hiring an attorney in effort to stay in business.

The issue of marijuana businesses came into sharp focus last summer, when new state regulations folded medicinal marijuana operations into the broader recreational marijuana market.

Many of the affected businesses previously operated low-key operations solely providing medicinal marijuana without any interference from county authorities.
